HS-229: Variants

In this recorded course, we will take a look at all the different methods of instancing in Houdini. We will set up multiple projects, design and art direct the scenes, generate iterations for the objects, set up materials, and render our scene. The students will receive various digital assets designed to increase the speed and easiness of the workflow. In the end, we will also look at Redshift, one of the best third-party render engines available right now, and set up proxies to increase the speed of our work. By combining the power of Redshift and the Copy Variants node, we will develop an easy but versatile workflow that we can use for many different projects.

Students will leave this class with a better understanding of the underlying fundamentals of instancing, simple and easy techniques for speeding up the workflow, creating and managing simple but effective HDAs in Houdini, and enjoying the fast and easy proxy workflow with Redshift.

In this session, we will walk through the basics of instancing, compare different methods and dive into the world of variants. We will also look at the different ways we can use the copy variants node and the possibilities.

In this session, we will look deeper into the copy variants tool and the accompanying utility nodes. We’ll create a project from scratch and discuss different methods and possibilities. We will wrap up the session with some tips and tricks about rendering and proxies.
