Class Description:

This class will show how to efficiently set up a tidal wave effect via Houdini Flip Fluids. It is a conceptual class that will discuss the thinking that goes into a big wave setup and show how applying physical concepts straightforwardly is a valid way to deal with the abstraction a software like Houdini provides.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will get a behind-the-scenes look at tackling large effects for a blockbuster animated movie. The class will look at concepts that should be generally useful, independent of software version and feature set.

Topics Covered:

Session 1

Making Tidal Waves

Simulating a large-scale flood effect efficiently

This session will show how to efficiently set up a tidal wave effect via Houdini Flip Fluids. We will discuss the thoughts that go into a setup like this and show that applying physical concepts straightforwardly is a valid way to deal with the abstraction a software like Houdini provides.
Therefore, the majority of the class will deal with background info, concepts and mapping out the gameplan while the actual Houdini implementation, while shown and provided as a scene file afterwards, will only be demonstrated in the second part of the class
