Course Description

Class Description:

In this recorded course, students will learn how to use basic operations and workflows to model static and dynamic natural shapes in Houdini 19. Furthermore, we will discuss gathering references, implementing our ideas, designing and rendering an entire project from scratch, and learn tips and tricks to speed up the workflow.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will leave this class with a range of new techniques for designing, modeling, and rendering alien life forms in a realistic manner.

Topics Covered:

Week 1: Introduction

In this session, we will go through multiple Houdini setups and talk about the workflow in small manageable examples. We will make basic shapes that can be instanced across a surface, we will talk about infecting an object, generating VDBs based on simple objects, displacing geometry, and basic attributes workflows.
1. Intro
2. Modeling Basic Shapes
3. Simple Particle Simulations
4. Using Vellum
5. VDB workflows
6. Instancing
7. Using Loops

Week 2: Main Project

In this session, we will gather our references, think about the alternative ways we can create our scene and we’ll do an entire project from scratch.
1. Intro
2. Gathering References
3. Combining Different Simulations
4. Main Project

Week 3: Rendering

In this session, we will go through basic lighting scenarios. Develop our materials using low-level redshift nodes, talk about noise, displacements, bumps and get a better understanding of rendering.
1. Intro
2. Three Point Lighting
3. Redshift Basic Settings
4. Lookdeving The Project
5. Setting up The Materials
